We came to the Monterey Bay area for one reason, to attend the wedding of Chela Gray to Wes Grant. Susie had met Chela's mother, Terrie, in an online distance learning program, in 1990. We became friends and met Terrie and three of her children in conferences around the country. We have also hosted them at our home. We and they refer to us as their East Coast family.
The wedding took place this evening at the Pasatiempo Golf Club overlooking Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay. This was a beautiful setting for a wedding and the weather couldn't have cooperated more. This morning dawned gray and stayed that way until noon. At the time of the wedding ceremony, officiated by the bride's brother, Jeremy, the haze had mostly cleared and the view of Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz was spectacular. Later in the evening, a three quarter moon shone over the bay and its light was reflected off the water. It had cleared enough so that we could see the lights of Monterey, 25 miles away.
In the morning we drove south to Carmel by the Sea, about 15 miles south of the campground. Carmel is not an ordinary beach town. It is, to say the least, an upscale town. Walking through the streets of the town one encounters boutique shops, a variety of restaurants, many art galleries and lots of flowers everywhere. There are no high rise buildings in the town center. I don't think I saw any buildings higher than two stories. We drove along Scenic Drive and stopped to walk on the beach. Scenic drive is a residential neighborhood with multi-million dollar homes overlooking the bay. The low clouds, haze and temperature in the low 60s didn't keep people out of the water. I would have taken more pictures of the town, but, because of the overcast, the light was very flat and the colors were not as vivid as they should have been.
